Hutton Village Care Home - Bupa

So, my Aunt Brenda, who once tried to iron a shirt while still wearing it, recently moved into Hutton Village Care Home. Bupa runs the place, which is fancy-speak for “they’ve got their act together.” I was expecting a sad beige box of doom, but instead I found this—a care home that feels more like a quirky country pub with a really good cleaning crew.

The Spy Mission (I Mean, Visit)

I walked in bracing for that smell—you know the one, like boiled cabbage and regret. Zero. It smelled like fresh scones and lavender. I almost asked if they had a secret portal to a spa.

The receptionist didn’t look like a prison warden; she looked like someone who genuinely enjoys other people's stories. When I asked for Brenda, she said, “Oh, she’s in the pub,” and I panicked for a second. Turns out, they have an actual pub area, complete with a dartboard and a sign that says “No moaning before noon.”

Brenda’s New Empire

I found my aunt in the garden, aggressively pruning a rosebush and bossing around a gentleman named Bernard. She’s 82 and has more energy than a toddler on a sugar rush. The staff just let her do her thing, which I respect deeply.

The activities list looked like a festival schedule: Chair Yoga with Dave, History of Nonsense (yes, that’s a real class), and something called “Whiskey Wednesday.” I signed up for Whiskey Wednesday immediately. No regrets.

The Shocking Bits (Literally)

Here’s the surprising fact: Bupa uses robots to do some of the cleaning. Not scary ones from a sci-fi movie, but cute little vacuum bots that the residents have named. One is called “Dusty McFluffface.” I’m not joking.

Also, they have a silent disco on Fridays. Picture ten people over 80 wearing massive headphones, shuffling to songs from 1962 while a physiotherapist gently yells “STOP DANCING SO HARD!” It is the best thing I have ever witnessed. My aunt did the twist and nearly needed a nap, but she got back up.

Food That Doesn’t Suck

Now, the food. I was mentally prepared for a gray fish stick and a sad blob of mashed potato. Instead, they served slow-braised lamb with a red wine jus. I asked if I could move in. The chef, a lovely guy named Liam, said, “Only if you’re over 65 or willing to fake a hip fracture.”

They even have a “chef’s table” where residents can critique the menu. Bernard from the garden critiqued the portion sizes. He said the lamb was “barely a mouthful.” Bernard is my new hero.

The Verdict

Hutton Village isn’t a place where you go to wait for the end. It’s a place where you go to have a laugh, eat good food, and maybe start a small gardening gang with a grumpy man named Bernard. Bupa has managed to make old age look like a weird, wonderful retirement party you’re actually invited to.

If you’re worried about dropping a relative here, don’t be. Just make sure they’re okay with robots named Dusty McFluffface. And that you have a designated driver for Whiskey Wednesday.
