How To Figure Out An Area

So, you need to figure out an area. Maybe you’re buying a rug, painting a wall, or just trying to win an argument about whose backyard is bigger. Either way, you’ve stumbled into a world of geometric panic. Relax. We’re going to measure stuff without crying.

Square and Rectangle: The Lazy Person’s Friend

Start with a square or rectangle. You just multiply length by width. That’s it—no trigonometry, no blood sacrifice.

Imagine your living room is 10 feet long and 12 feet wide. That’s 120 square feet. Congratulations, you now know how much carpet to buy. Don't accidentally order 120 linear feet of string, or you’ll have a very sad, bare floor.

Triangles: The Awkward Shape

Triangles are the middle child of shapes—forgotten and a little weird. For a right triangle, take the base, multiply it by the height, then divide by two.

Why divide? Because a triangle is literally half of a rectangle that got sliced by a drama queen. If your triangle has a base of 6 feet and height of 4 feet, you get 12 square feet. That’s roughly the size of your neighbor’s ego.

Circles: Enter the Pi Monster

Circles are where math gets spicy. You need the radius (half the width of the circle). Then you square it (multiply it by itself). Then you multiply by pi—which is roughly 3.14, but really it’s 3.1415926535… I stopped memorizing it after the universe got bored.

A pizza with a 10-inch radius has an area of about 314 square inches. That’s a lot of pepperoni. Fun fact: if you spread that area out, it could cover a small child. Please don’t test this.

Irregular Shapes: The “Eh, Close Enough” Method

Got a weird L-shaped room? Don’t panic. Just chop it up into smaller rectangles and triangles. Calculate each piece’s area, then add them up.

It’s like playing Tetris with your tape measure. If your shapes start looking like a Picasso painting, just guess. I won’t tell anyone. The human eye can’t tell the difference between 200 and 210 square feet anyway. That’s a scientific fact. Probably.

The Surprising Fact That Will Win a Pub Quiz

Here’s a wild one: Ancient Egyptian surveyors figured out land areas after the Nile flooded. They used knotted ropes to make right triangles—and they still got paid. So if a guy in a loincloth can do it without a calculator, you can do it with your phone.

Also, the world’s largest living thing by area is a honey fungus in Oregon. It covers 2,385 acres. That’s 3.5 square miles of pure mushroom doom. Its area is roughly 10 million square feet. I dare you to water it.

Handy Cheat Sheet for Normal Humans

Square: length × width. Triangle: base × height ÷ 2. Circle: π × radius². Irregular: panic, then chop it up.

If you forget any of this, just remember: area is always in square units. Square inches, square feet, or in the case of my last birthday cake, square regrets.

Now go forth and measure. And if you mess up, just call it a “custom rustic look.” Every blunder is a feature if you’re confident enough.
